Packing for the desert is mostly about comfort and self-respect. You don’t need lots of gear — you need the right basics, chosen calmly.
Core clothing (works for most seasons)
- Lightweight long sleeves (sun protection without overheating)
- Loose trousers (movement, breathability, respect)
- A warm layer for evenings (desert temperatures drop)
- A wind layer (especially in open areas)
- A scarf or buff (dust, wind, sun)
Footwear
Bring one pair you trust. Blisters ruin good days.
- Closed-toe walking shoes with grip
- Optional sandals for camp
Personal essentials
- Sun protection (hat + sunscreen)
- Headlamp or small torch
- Reusable water bottle
- Basic personal medications
- Wet wipes / small towel
Comfort items (optional)
- A small notebook
- Earplugs (wind can be loud)
- A simple camera if you prefer not to use your phone
What not to bring
- Anything fragile you’ll worry about
- Outfits for “content”
- Excess gear that becomes a burden
